Ghana’s passport has made a remarkable comeback on the international stage, now ranked among the strongest in Africa. According to the 2026 Henley Passport Index, Ghana holds the 11th position on the continent and 68th globally, granting holders visa-free access to about 60 destinations worldwide.

This achievement marks a significant rebound from past years. In 2006, Ghana’s passport was ranked 53rd globally, but it later slipped to a record low of 84th in 2021. The latest improvement signals renewed strength and credibility in Ghana’s international mobility.

Foreign Affairs Minister Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has been credited with spearheading reforms and diplomatic initiatives that contributed to this turnaround. Under his leadership, officials say Ghana is “bouncing back stronger and better” and remains committed to restoring the passport to the very top tier in the foreseeable future.
For citizens eager to take advantage of this progress, applications for Ghanaian passports remain open through the official portal.
