President John Dramani Mahama has announced the establishment of a modern poultry processing facility in Bechem, Bono Region, as part of a sweeping national strategy to revitalize Ghana’s poultry industry and reduce dependence on imports.
Speaking at the launch of the Nkoko Nkitinkiti programme in the Ashanti Region, President Mahama emphasized the need to match increased poultry production with efficient processing infrastructure.
“We recognize that increased production must be accompanied by efficient processing. And that is why we will be cutting short for the establishment of a modern poultry processing factory in Bechem, in the Bono Region. Procurement processes are underway,” he said.
Once completed, the facility will serve as a key market hub for small and medium-scale poultry producers across the Bono, Ashanti, and Bono East regions. The initiative forms part of a broader national goal to raise Ghana’s poultry self-sufficiency from the current 12% to approximately 75% by 2028.
“So 100% now, not 75% of Angola,” the president remarked, underscoring the urgency and ambition of the plan.
To support this transformation, President Mahama outlined a comprehensive package of interventions, including:
- Access to improved poultry breeds and affordable feed formulation
- Establishment of 270 farmer service centers to provide mechanization inputs and extension services
- Expansion of veterinary and animal health services to protect the national flock
- Implementation of an innovative agri-financing scheme to provide affordable credit to poultry farmers
- Strengthened collaboration with district assemblies, private investors, and development partners to embed the initiative in local communities
Describing the programme as a “citizens’ movement for food security and self-reliance,” President Mahama called on traditional and religious leaders to champion the initiative in their communities. He also encouraged women and youth to seize the opportunity to build sustainable family enterprises and reshape their economic futures.
“To our development partners, we sincerely appreciate your enduring partnership and invite you to align your support with this national vision,” he said. “And to our private sector actors, invest boldly in hatcheries, feed mills, cold chain systems, and processing plants. Together, we can turn Ghana into a regional poultry powerhouse.”
The Nkoko Nkitinkiti programme is a flagship component of the Feed Ghana agenda, aimed at achieving agricultural transformation, food sovereignty, and inclusive economic growth.
