Ghana Records 5.1% Economic Growth in August 2025

Ghana’s economy expanded by 5.1% in August 2025, according to preliminary figures from the Monthly Indicator of Economic Growth (MIEG) released by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).

This marks a slight improvement over the 4.9% growth recorded in August 2024.

The GSS attributed the August 2025 performance largely to the Services sector, which surged by 9.5%, a sharp rise compared to the 2.6% growth posted in the same month last year. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Education were identified as the main drivers of this sustained expansion. Overall, the Services sector accounted for nearly 80% of the total growth.

Agriculture followed as the second-largest contributor, recording a 7.4% increase in August 2025, up from 2.3% in August 2024. The sector contributed approximately 27.3% to the overall GDP growth.

Industry, however, experienced a downturn, contracting by 1.8% in August 2025 after expanding by 9.1% in August 2024. The GSS noted that the decline in industry “dragged on the 5.1% growth recorded in August 2025 by 12.2%.”

Meanwhile, the Statistical Service revised its July 2025 MIEG figures, lowering growth to 3.7% from the earlier estimate of 4.5%. Officials explained that the adjustment was based on updated information received from data providers.

Government Statistician, Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu, emphasized that while the release of the data offers insight into quarterly economic performance, it remains incomplete.

“We should be guided as to how we interpret this data, because it is based on provisional data,” Dr. Iddrisu cautioned.

He further disclosed that the Service is preparing to publish the third-quarter GDP estimates in December 2025.

The MIEG serves as a high-frequency tracker of economic activity, providing monthly updates on how the economy is performing across key sectors.
