Ghana Moves to Preserve Nkrumah’s Historic Guinea Residence

The Government of Ghana has begun formal negotiations with the family of former Guinean President Ahmed Sékou Touré to take possession of the residence where Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah lived and worked during his final years as Co-President of Guinea.

Acting on the instructions of President John Dramani Mahama, the initiative seeks to renovate and preserve the abandoned home in Conakry as both a mark of respect and a lasting tribute to Ghana’s first President. The project is also expected to enhance tourism by offering visitors a complete journey through Nkrumah’s extraordinary life, spanning Ghana and Guinea.

The landmark decision was conveyed on Saturday when Vice President, H.E. Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, led a Ghanaian delegation to meet three generations of the Sékou Touré family, headed by the late president’s eldest son. The delegation also toured Nkrumah’s former residence following the investiture of Guinean President Mamady Doumbouya.

Officials say the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently negotiating the terms and conditions of the arrangement while engaging preservation experts to ensure the property is restored to international heritage standards.

In a statement, government emphasized that the process will be conducted with transparency and accountability, assuring the Ghanaian public that updates will be provided at every stage of the assignment.

The move underscores Ghana’s commitment to safeguarding the legacy of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, whose leadership and vision continue to inspire generations across Africa and beyond.
