Ghana Makes History as First Non-European Chair of GAAMAC

Ghana has made history by taking over the Chairmanship of the Global Action Against Mass Atrocity Crimes (GAAMAC) from Switzerland  the first time the leadership of the organization has moved outside Europe.

The symbolic handover took place at a ceremony in Accra, marking a milestone in Ghana’s growing role in global peace and security.

Pledging Ghana’s full commitment to GAAMAC’s mission of preventing genocide, ethnic cleansing, crimes against humanity, and war crimes, Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak called for stronger preventive measures.

“We must strengthen early warning systems, combat hate speech, ensure accountability, and build inclusive societies to reduce the risk of atrocities,” he said.

In a Facebook post, Mr. Mubarak congratulated Dr. George Amoh, Executive Secretary of the National Peace Council, on his appointment as GAAMAC Chairman. He reaffirmed the President and Government’s commitment to empowering him to succeed in the role.

“Dr. Amoh’s leadership is an opportunity for Ghana to demonstrate its dedication to peacebuilding on the global stage,” the Minister noted.

Swiss Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Simone Giger, praised the transition, saying it reflected Ghana’s strong record in peacekeeping and its commitment to peaceful coexistence.

“Ghana’s assumption of the Secretariat is a testament to its credibility and leadership in promoting peace,” she remarked.

GAAMAC, an international platform for the prevention of mass atrocity crimes, will now operate under Ghana’s stewardship, with expectations high for advancing global cooperation in atrocity prevention.
