President John Dramani Mahama has highlighted Ghana’s willingness to collaborate with the Portuguese government to set up a national airline, as part of broader efforts to enhance the country’s aviation industry and stimulate economic growth.
He delivered these comments on Thursday, July 10, at the Jubilee House during a formal gathering to accept letters of credence from five newly appointed ambassadors to Ghana, including Maria Da Conceição de Sousa Pilar, Portugal’s new representative. The other diplomats hailed from Seychelles, Venezuela, Chad, and Gabon.
During his conversation with the Portuguese ambassador, President Mahama emphasized the strategic value of strengthening ties between Ghana and Portugal, particularly in areas such as air travel, commerce, and foreign investment.
“We welcome the fact that the Portuguese national carrier operates direct flights to Accra,” President Mahama remarked. “Ghana is in the process of reviving its own national airline. When the time is right, we’ll be open to partnerships, and if Portugal’s airline is interested, we could explore working together.”
He also stressed the importance of deepening economic cooperation and encouraging increased investment in Ghana, pointing to the country’s abundant natural assets and expanding consumer base.
“We aim to broaden our economic connections and are confident that Ghana can draw more investors. The country is rich in natural resources and boasts a population of nearly 35 million,” he concluded.
