The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has officially extended the deadline for transitioning to its new gold trading license regime from May 21 to June 21, 2025. The decision follows petitions from stakeholders, allowing gold traders more time to comply with the new licensing requirements.
GoldBod clarified that individuals and businesses holding licenses issued by the now-defunct Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) or the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources can continue trading legally until the new deadline.
However, after June 21, 2025, only holders of a GoldBod-issued license will be permitted to purchase, sell, or engage in gold trading within Ghana.
Additionally, effective immediately (May 22, 2025), the export function of all licenses issued by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources is no longer valid. Moving forward, only GoldBod will be authorized to export small-scale gold from Ghana.
Legal implications and enforcement
GoldBod emphasized that operating with an outdated license beyond the new deadline will be considered an offense under the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140), and violators will face prosecution.
The Board urged all gold traders to apply for a GoldBod license via the official website
The extension has been welcomed by many gold traders who had expressed concerns about the initial deadline. Industry experts believe the additional time will allow businesses to adjust to the new regulatory framework while ensuring compliance with national gold trading laws.
GoldBod reiterated that the license application process remains open, but after June 21, 2025, unlicensed trading will not be tolerated. The Board seeks cooperation from all stakeholders as it works to optimize national benefits from Ghana’s gold resources.
