Ghana Extols Historic Ties with U.S. on America’s 250th Independence Anniversary

Ghana has reaffirmed its longstanding friendship with the United States of America, congratulating the nation on the occasion of its 250th Independence Anniversary.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ghana recalled the deep roots of bilateral relations dating back to 1957, when U.S. Vice President Richard Nixon, civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and diplomat Ralph Bunche joined in celebrating Ghana’s independence. Since then, the two countries have expanded cooperation across social development, trade, and investment, with landmark projects such as the Akosombo Dam, the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO), and initiatives under the Millennium Challenge Compact (MCC) and the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).

The release highlighted memorable visits by U.S. Presidents Bill Clinton in 1998, George W. Bush in 2008, and Barack Obama in 2009, alongside watershed trips by Ghanaian leaders including Jerry John Rawlings, John Agyekum Kufuor, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo‑Addo, and John Dramani Mahama. These engagements, it noted, have strengthened people‑to‑people ties and fostered robust educational and cultural exchanges.

In a special message to U.S. President Donald J. Trump, former President John D. Mahama underscored the enduring values that bind the two nations. “It is my deep conviction that the enduring friendship and cooperation between our two countries will continue to be shaped by values and common interests, especially in the areas of the rule of law, human rights and democracy, as well as our shared aspiration for economic prosperity,” he stated.

President Mahama extended warm wishes to the government and people of the United States for a peaceful and joyous anniversary celebration, emphasizing Ghana’s commitment to advancing mutual understanding and cooperation.

The Ministry concluded by urging media houses to share Ghana’s message of solidarity, reflecting the country’s pride in its historic partnership with the United States.
