The Government of Ghana has strongly condemned the fatal shooting of a Ghanaian national, Mr. Bashiru Isuk, during anti‑immigrant demonstrations in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, on June 30, 2026.
In a statement issued on July 1, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the incident as a “senseless act of violence” and expressed profound shock and sadness at the rising tide of xenophobia targeting African nationals, including Ghanaians, in South Africa.
The Ministry confirmed that Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria has lodged a formal protest with South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation and filed a complaint with the South African Police Service. An autopsy has been conducted on the deceased at the request of the Ghanaian government, and the bereaved family has been duly notified.
“Those responsible must be brought to justice without delay,” the statement emphasized, demanding a full and transparent investigation leading to the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators. Ghana also reiterated its call for urgent measures to guarantee the safety of all foreign nationals residing in South Africa.
The Ministry noted that Ghana has already petitioned the African Union Commission (AUC) over xenophobic attacks in South Africa and urged the AU to treat the matter with the urgency it deserves.
This latest development underscores Ghana’s diplomatic push to protect its citizens abroad while pressing for accountability and stronger safeguards against xenophobic violence.
