Ghana, China Sign $30m Grant for Damongo University Project

Ghana and China have deepened their bilateral cooperation with the signing of a US$30 million grant agreement to support the construction of a university in Damongo, Savanna Region.

The agreement was formalized during a courtesy call by the outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa, on Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson earlier today.

On behalf of President John Mahama and the people of Ghana, the Finance Minister expressed gratitude to Ambassador Tong for his dedicated service and commitment to strengthening Ghana–China relations. He described the grant as a significant boost to Ghana’s educational infrastructure and a symbol of enduring partnership between the two nations.

Mr. Forson also underscored the importance of reducing exchange losses in bilateral trade, stressing that it is “only logical that trade between Ghana and China should increasingly be settled in our own currencies.”

Wishing Ambassador Tong well in his future endeavours, the Finance Minister reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to further strengthening ties with China, noting that the relationship continues to deliver tangible benefits for both countries.

The Damongo university project is expected to expand access to higher education in the northern regions, contributing to Ghana’s long-term development goals.
