Ghana, AUDA-NEPAD Deepen Collaboration on Women’s Empowerment

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment during a meeting with a delegation from the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD).

The delegation, led by Mr. Symerre Grey-Johnson, Director of Human Capital and Institutional Development, visited the Ministry following earlier engagements with Dr. Lartey during the 70th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70) in New York.

Welcoming the delegation, Dr. Lartey expressed appreciation for the visit and underscored the importance of strengthening collaboration between Ghana and AUDA-NEPAD in promoting the welfare and empowerment of women across the continent.

The delegation briefed the Minister on the African Women’s Empowerment Programme (AWEP), highlighting its focus on women’s economic empowerment, leadership development, and initiatives aimed at improving the livelihoods of vulnerable women. They also explored opportunities for Ghana to domesticate aspects of the programme to expand its impact nationally.

Discussions further centred on areas of mutual interest, including investment in women, leadership development, and strengthening partnerships to accelerate progress toward gender equality and inclusive development.

The delegation informed the Minister about upcoming continental engagements, including consultations marking the 25th anniversary of AWEP and other events aimed at promoting African arts, culture, creativity, and women’s leadership. Ghana was invited to play a leading role in these initiatives, with AUDA-NEPAD commending the country’s continued commitment to gender and development issues.

Both parties expressed optimism about deepening cooperation and leveraging their shared commitment to advancing women’s empowerment and sustainable development across Africa.
