Ghana and China Strengthen Strategic Partnership

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (MP), held a high-level meeting with the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China, His Excellency Cong Song, to discuss ways of deepening the strategic partnership between Ghana and China.

During the meeting, Honourable Ablakwa congratulated Ambassador Song on his appointment and highlighted ongoing projects initiated under his predecessor, including the Aflao Market and Damongo University. He expressed confidence that the new Ambassador would ensure their timely completion. The Minister also emphasized Ghana’s readiness to explore new areas of cooperation, particularly environmental reclamation projects and public education initiatives aimed at curbing illegal mining.

Touching on trade relations, Honourable Ablakwa noted the growing volumes of trade between the two countries and expressed optimism that the operationalisation of the zero-tariff policy would stimulate industrial growth in Ghana and help reduce the trade deficit.

Ambassador Song reaffirmed China’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties, particularly in trade and people-to-people exchanges. He assured that processes for implementing the zero-tariff arrangement were well advanced, which would create opportunities for Ghanaian exports to China. He further pledged China’s commitment to completing ongoing projects on schedule and stressed that China does not support illegal mining activities.

Both parties reiterated their dedication to working together to promote development and enhance the longstanding friendship between Ghana and China.
