GBA Stands by Decision to Host England and Wales Bar Council at 2025 Conference

The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has addressed concerns surrounding the involvement of the Bar Council of England and Wales in its forthcoming 2025 Annual Conference in Wa, describing the move as routine and not out of the ordinary.

In a statement signed by National President Efua Ghartey, the Association dismissed criticisms suggesting that the Council’s invitation was inappropriate or unprecedented.

The GBA emphasized that the Bar Council of England and Wales had previously participated in its 2022 Annual Conference held in Ho, and that collaboration with international legal bodies has long been part of its tradition.

“The GBA also maintains relationships with other professional bodies like the African Bar Association, the International Bar Association, Nigerian Bar Association, Sierra Leonean Bar Association, the Law Society of Kenya, the Law Society England and Wales, and the American Bar Association, among others, who from year to year are invited to attend programmes of the GBA,” the statement noted.

The Association reiterated its commitment to remaining apolitical and dedicated to defending the Constitution and preserving the integrity of the legal profession.

The 2025 Annual Conference, set to be held in Wa, the capital of the Upper West Region, is expected to draw participation from lawyers, judges, and international legal delegates.
