Four Arrested Over Shooting During Burial at Asamankese

The Eastern South Regional Police Command has arrested four persons in connection with a shooting incident that disrupted a burial and funeral ceremony at Asamankese in the Eastern Region on Sunday, October 26, 2025.

The incident, which occurred during the burial of six family members, resulted in injuries to six civilians and three police officers.

A statement signed by DSP David Fianko-Okyere, Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Command, said police intelligence revealed that some individuals were conveying firearms and cartridges in a room near the Asamankese chief’s palace. Officers were dispatched to the scene, leading to the retrieval of one single-barrel gun, 84 live AAA cartridges, seven cutlasses, and two knives.

According to the police, the suspects — identified as Isaac Ntim Nana Yaw Zenyo, Bismark K. K. Adam (29), and Buaben Richard (25) — were arrested at the scene. However, some agitated youth attacked the police with stones and other implements, injuring three officers and damaging two police vehicles.

The youth reportedly blocked the Asamankese–Akroso road and fired shots around the chief’s palace, claiming the bereaved family wanted to bury their relatives in the royal cemetery.

Six victims, namely David Odame (28), Musah Gyakweli (29), Patrick Ofosu, Obeng Emmanuel (18), Asamoah Sey (18), and one unidentified person, sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to the Asamankese Government Hospital, where they are receiving treatment.

The police say all suspects are in custody assisting with investigations.

“The situation has since been normalised, and Asamankese Township is calm,” the statement assured.

DSP Fianko-Okyere added that the Command has intensified patrols and surveillance in the area to maintain law and order. He further urged residents to remain calm as police continue efforts to ensure safety and security in the community.
