Eight individuals have been formally charged in connection with violent disturbances that marred the Ablekuma North Parliamentary re-run held on Friday, July 11, 2025. The Ghana Police Service, through its Regional Public Affairs Unit, confirmed the development in a press release dated August 26, 2025.
The suspects—Mohammed Abubakari, Private Security Officer Tijani Mahamadu, Sherrif Prince Dagbanu, Blessing Adjei, Osmanu Alhassan, Abdul Razak, Musah Mumtari, and Ato Essel—are facing a total of 17 counts. These include Conspiracy to Commit Crime, Rioting, Rioting with Offensive Weapons, and Causing Unlawful Damage, all under the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
According to the statement signed by Chief Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of the Regional Public Affairs Unit, the accused persons were arraigned before court on August 29, 2025. Each was granted bail in the sum of GH₵80,000.00 with two sureties.
The Ablekuma North re-run, which was necessitated by electoral irregularities in the December 2024 general elections, was expected to be a peaceful exercise. However, tensions flared at several polling centres, leading to clashes that disrupted the voting process and left property damaged.
The Ghana Police Service has assured the public of its commitment to maintaining law and order, especially during electoral activities. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and the Service has urged citizens to remain calm and allow the law to take its course.
“We will not tolerate acts of lawlessness, especially those that threaten the peace and stability of our democratic processes,” the statement emphasized.
The case is expected to resume in court in the coming weeks.
