Eight Convicted Over Ablekuma North By-Election Clashes, Fined GH¢6,000 Each

Eight individuals involved in violent disruptions during the Ablekuma North by-election have been found guilty and sentenced by the Accra Circuit Court.

Each of the offenders was fined 500 penalty units, equivalent to GH¢6,000. Failure to pay the fine will result in a two-year prison term.

The convicted men—Mohammed Abubakari, Tijani Mahmudu, Prince Dzakpasu, Anas Mohammed, Mohammed Hamda, Darko Otibu Samuel, Musah Muntari, and Ali Saeed (also known as Bomba)—appeared before Judge Isaac Addo on Friday, August 29, 2025. All eight entered guilty pleas.

According to the prosecution, the altercation took place at the Methodist Church Polling Station during the by-election. The victims included Hawa Mavis Koomson, a former Minister of State and ex-Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East; Majeed Mohammed Saana, a local trader; and Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei, Deputy Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

While overseeing the electoral process, the victims were reportedly attacked without provocation. Mrs. Koomson and Mr. Saana were assaulted first, followed by an attack on Mr. Kwei.

Footage of the incident circulated widely on social media.

The accused were charged with conspiracy to assault and three separate counts of assault, in violation of Sections 23(1) and 84 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

The trial, which commenced on Monday, August 26, was expedited after all eight defendants confessed to their involvement, resulting in swift convictions and sentencing.
