EC Chair Jean Mensa to Appear Before Parliament Over Ablekuma North Election Dispute

The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, is set to appear before Parliament’s Committee of the Whole this week to address the ongoing electoral dispute in the Ablekuma North Constituency.

The dispute stems from irregularities in the collation of results during the December 7, 2024, parliamentary elections, leaving the constituency without a duly elected Member of Parliament.

The situation has sparked controversy, with the Minority Caucus petitioning the Ghana Police Service to provide security for a transparent re-collation process. The opposition insists that resolving the issue will ensure fairness and credibility in the electoral process.

Sources within Parliament have indicated that legislators will press Mensa for concrete timelines and assurances on the next steps. The EC is expected to clarify whether the results will be officially declared or if a re-run election will be necessary.

Meanwhile, stakeholders, including civil society organizations, have urged the EC to act swiftly to prevent prolonged uncertainty in Ablekuma North, which has been without parliamentary representation for more than six months.

The upcoming session is anticipated to be highly charged, as members of both Majority and Minority Caucuses seek clarity and accountability from Ghana’s electoral body.
