Chairman Wontumi to Face CID Over Akonta Mining Probe Today

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako  popularly referred to as Chairman Wontumi  is scheduled to appear before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Monday, October 6.

This development comes after a strong caution from the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, who on Friday, October 3, warned that Wontumi would face arrest if he failed to show up, stressing that charges against him had already been approved.

The case revolves around Akonta Mining Limited, a company associated with the NPP regional chairman, which is currently under investigation for alleged illegal mining operations.

Dr. Ayine explained that progress on the matter had been delayed because key case files were hidden during the previous administration.

On Sunday, October 5, Wontumi’s legal representative, Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed that his client would comply with the directive to appear before the CID.

“We have been asked to appear at the police CID in Accra, and we are ready for that. We will be there at 10 a.m. at the CID headquarters,” he stated.

Mr. Appiah-Kubi, however, criticized the Attorney General’s caution, describing it as unwarranted and emphasizing that his client has consistently cooperated with investigators.

“The announcement by the Attorney General surprises me. We respect the invitation and will honour it, but the warning that followed was unnecessary. We are not in any way going to disrespect the invitation,” he added.
