Australia, Canada, and UK unite to fight visa fraud in Ghana

The diplomatic missions of Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom in Ghana have come together to roll out a week-long public awareness drive aimed at addressing the rising issue of visa fraud.

This campaign forms part of a broader international initiative spearheaded by UK Visas & Immigration, with backing from partner nations such as Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Visa fraud continues to impact many Ghanaians, as dishonest agents and false information often result in financial losses, emotional strain, and long-term travel bans.

Aligned with International Fraud Awareness Week (16–22 November 2025), the program seeks to inform the public about the risks of visa scams, encourage safe application practices, and promote reliance on official government channels.

Bernice Owen-Jones, Australia’s High Commissioner to Ghana, stressed the need for caution, stating: “Australia is proud to stand with our international partners to combat visa fraud. The Fighting Visa Fraud campaign sends a clear message: if you are applying for a visa, always use trusted, official sources and beware of anyone promising shortcuts or guaranteed results.”

Underscoring the extent of the challenge, Dr Christian Rogg, the UK’s High Commissioner to Ghana, remarked: “In 2024, 1,632 applicants from Ghana used fraudulent means when applying for UK visit visas. While that represents only 4% of all Ghanaian applicants, it is still far too many people misled by agents into taking an action that resulted in a 10-year visa ban. Fraud is never worth the risk.”

Myriam Montrat, Canada’s High Commissioner to Ghana, reinforced her country’s stance, saying: “Canada remains firmly committed to promoting safe, orderly, and regular migration, and we are taking decisive steps to stop fraudulent practices that put applicants at risk.

“We are proud to collaborate on the ‘Fighting Visa Fraud Together’ campaign with Australia and the United Kingdom, reflecting our shared commitment to protect applicants, strengthen the integrity of our immigration systems, and ensure that people have access to accurate, reliable, and trustworthy information.”

According to the joint statement, the three nations remain dedicated to safeguarding genuine applicants and ensuring visa procedures are transparent, secure, and accessible to all Ghanaians.

Throughout the initiative, the High Commissions will distribute educational materials via social media, encouraging the public to engage with the campaign through its official hashtag. #AUSCANUKGH.
