Asantehene to Deliver Final Ruling on Bawku Chieftaincy Conflict Today

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is expected to issue his concluding verdict on the long-standing Bawku chieftaincy conflict today, Monday, December 1, at the Manhyia Palace.

Earlier this year, President John Dramani Mahama entrusted the Asantehene with the responsibility of spearheading renewed efforts to resolve the decades-old dispute.

Otumfuo’s role in this latest peace initiative began in April, when he engaged delegations from the rival factions between April 28 and 30, reopening dialogue and laying the groundwork for constructive negotiations.

Although discussions were briefly suspended, they resumed on May 13. At that time, the Asantehene observed that the talks had contributed to a period of relative calm in the municipality.

For years, Bawku has endured recurring violence, sporadic clashes, and heightened tensions—leading to fatalities, restricted movement, and the enforcement of curfews. These persistent hostilities have disrupted livelihoods, weakened social cohesion, and raised nationwide concern over the urgent need for lasting peace.

According to the Manhyia Palace, today’s gathering represents the culmination of months of intensive consultations and peace-building engagements.

Residents and national stakeholders remain optimistic that the Asantehene’s final pronouncement will open the door to reconciliation, stability, and development in the troubled area.

Ahead of the announcement, Fraud and Security Consultant Richard Kumadoe expressed confidence that the mediation team will succeed in securing lasting peace for the municipality.

The two rival groups involved in the decades-old dispute in the Upper East Region arrived at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi yesterday for the concluding stage of the Asantehene’s mediation process.

Speaking to Baina News, Richard Kumadoe emphasized that Otumfuo’s proven record in conflict resolution offers strong assurance of a positive outcome.
