Article 146 Committee Postpones Hearing of Second Petition Against Chief Justice Torkornoo

The Article 146 Committee of Inquiry has deferred its sitting on the second petition calling for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, following a mutual request from both the petitioner and the Chief Justice herself.

The Committee, which is currently reviewing three distinct petitions forwarded to President John Mahama in March this year, had planned to begin deliberations on the second petition after wrapping up proceedings on the first.

However, a formal appeal for postponement was jointly submitted by the second petitioner and the Chief Justice.

Speaking at the Jubilee House during the submission of the Committee’s findings on the first petition, Chairman Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang explained that the panel granted the adjournment in the interest of fairness and procedural integrity.

“Although we are constitutionally required to act with urgency, we also acknowledge the importance of allowing all parties sufficient time to prepare and present their arguments,” he said.

He added, “Accordingly, we shall be reporting on the second and third petitions in due time.”

The Committee has already completed its review of the first petition, which featured detailed testimonies from both sides and involved the submission of close to 10,000 pages of documentary material.

A sealed recommendation based on that petition has since been handed over to the President.
