Former Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government of engaging in excessive public relations over its handling of energy sector debts.
In a Facebook post, Dr. Amin Adam argued that the payment of $1.4 billion in energy sector arrears, highlighted in the 2025 Budget presented by the NDC administration, was not unprecedented. He noted that the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government had settled a similar amount in 2024 without fanfare.
“The NDC government does PR with everything. Paying Energy Sector debts of $1.4 billion is not new. As captured in the 2025 Budget presented by the NDC government, the previous NPP government paid $1.4 billion of the energy sector debts in 2024 without making noise about it,” Dr. Amin Adam stated.
The former minister’s remarks add to the ongoing debate over Ghana’s energy sector liabilities, which have long posed challenges to fiscal stability and power supply reliability. Successive governments have grappled with ballooning debts owed to independent power producers and other stakeholders, often leading to disputes over creditworthiness and the sustainability of the sector.
While the NDC has touted its recent payments as evidence of commitment to stabilizing the energy industry, critics like Dr. Amin Adam insist that such actions are routine responsibilities of government and should not be politicized.
The issue of energy sector debt remains a critical concern for Ghana’s economy, with analysts warning that without structural reforms, recurring arrears could continue to undermine growth and investor confidence.
