The Advertising Association of Ghana (AAG) has raised alarm over the ongoing billboard removal exercise in the Greater Accra Region, urging President John Dramani Mahama and the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs to step in and restore order.
In a statement released on Friday, February 13, the AAG reiterated its support for initiatives aimed at sanitising the outdoor advertising sector, improving public safety, and enhancing the visual appeal of Ghana’s skylines. Nonetheless, the association voiced strong reservations about the manner in which the demolitions are being executed.
The statement highlighted the absence of direct consultation with industry stakeholders, particularly operators who are central to outdoor advertising, before the exercise began. It also noted the lack of a clearly communicated framework outlining phased plans, timelines, compliance requirements, and enforcement standards.
The association further cited perceived irregularities and selective application of the rules, hinting that certain actions may be driven by political considerations or influenced by individuals within government who hold vested interests in parts of the advertising industry.
According to the AAG, such practices risk destabilising the sector, eroding investor confidence, and jeopardising the livelihoods of thousands of workers.
Calling for an urgent institutional reset, the association appealed to President Mahama and the Minister for Local Government to ensure transparent dialogue with stakeholders, clearly define the committee’s mandate, and adopt a structured, equitable, and phased demolition plan that upholds due process and regulatory integrity.
The AAG stressed that effective governance and coordinated implementation are essential to achieving public safety and improved urban aesthetics without undermining economic activity or discouraging investment in the outdoor advertising industry.
“There is a need for Institutional Reset and Proper Governance. The AAG is respectfully calling on His Excellency John Mahama and the Hon. Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs to intervene and call the Committee and the Greater Accra Regional Minister to order,” the statement concluded.
