The corridors of Parliament bore a quiet sense of purpose on Monday as His Lordship, Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, paid a courtesy call on the Rt Hon Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin. The meeting, described by the Speaker as historic, underscored the need for collaboration between the judiciary and legislature in consolidating Ghana’s democracy.
Welcoming the Chief Justice, Speaker Bagbin noted that the visit was a call to deepen institutional cooperation, stressing that strong ties between the two arms of government are vital for safeguarding the nation’s democratic gains.
In their discussions, the Chief Justice outlined a compelling vision for the future of justice delivery in Ghana. He proposed expanding access to justice for all citizens, introducing a shift system for court operations to reduce delays, and establishing specialized courts to address illegal mining and related infractions highlighted by the Public Accounts Committee.
He further emphasized reforms in legal education, calling for training that keeps pace with evolving national needs and emerging technologies. Beyond policy, the Chief Justice appealed for practical support to make these reforms effective—secure office accommodation for the judiciary, enhanced security for judicial personnel, and streamlined clearance processes to recruit additional staff and experts.
The exchange was marked by mutual respect and a shared commitment to service. As the two leaders parted, the message was clear: progress in Ghana’s justice system hinges on thoughtful dialogue, targeted reforms, and the courage to invest in institutions that safeguard justice for every citizen.
