Education Minister Advocates Human-Centred Approach to AI in Learning

The Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has called for stronger safeguards and clear standards in the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education, stressing that technology must remain complementary to human agency.

Speaking at a high-level summit in London focused on the role of Generative AI in education, the Minister joined global leaders and experts to deliberate on safety, standards, and benchmarks guiding the design and deployment of AI systems in schools.

During a panel discussion, Hon. Iddrisu underscored the importance of intentionally designing AI tools to promote and protect human agency. He noted that at the centre of AI in education are the learner and the teacher, and that technology should be harnessed to support teachers in delivering lessons more effectively while enabling learners to achieve better outcomes.

“Generative AI must be complementary rather than a substitute for human agency,” the Minister emphasized. “Human judgement and critical thinking remain the most essential cognitive abilities and cannot be replaced by AI.”

He further urged governments and institutions to adopt legislation and policy frameworks that safeguard these capabilities, ensuring that AI technologies are deployed responsibly and meaningfully in the education sector.

The summit brought together policymakers, educators, and technology experts to explore how AI can transform learning while maintaining ethical standards and protecting the role of teachers and students in the classroom.
