Ghana–Japan Relations Deepen with Business and Tech Cooperation

Ghana has strengthened its bilateral relations with Japan following a high-level visit by Her Excellency Ayano Kunimitsu, Japan’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, who led a 35-member Japanese business delegation to Accra.

Vice President, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, together with senior government officials, warmly welcomed the delegation, describing the engagements as “substantive and mutually beneficial.”

The visit has already yielded strategic partnerships with Ghanaian companies, an agreement to boost Japanese investment in Ghana, and expanded access to the Japanese market. Notably, Japanese car manufacturing firms are expected to open more branches in Ghana, further deepening industrial cooperation.

Ghana and Japan have also initiated steps to execute cooperation in space technology and artificial intelligence, building on the Memorandum of Understanding signed during TICAD 9 in Japan. Discussions additionally focused on enhancing value addition in cocoa processing, with the aim of making the iconic Ghana Chocolate brand even more successful in Japan.

Next year, the two nations will commemorate three historic milestones:

  • 70 years of Ghana–Japan bilateral relations
  • 100 years since Dr. Hideyo Noguchi’s sacrifice in Ghana’s fight against yellow fever
  • 50 years of JOC Volunteers’ service in Ghana

Officials say these anniversaries will highlight the depth of friendship and shared progress between the two countries. Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing the excellent relations with Japan, which continue to deliver economic, technological, and cultural benefits.
