The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (MP), has held strategic discussions with the Director of the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ghana, Professor Samuel A. Ntewusu, to advance Ghana’s role in the continental Reparations Agenda.
The meeting, held on Wednesday, 8th January 2026, focused on aligning national efforts with the African Union’s Theme of the Year: “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations.”
The Minister underscored the importance of scholarly collaboration in shaping policy and advocacy around reparations, noting that the Institute’s expertise would be instrumental in framing Ghana’s contributions to the continental discourse.
The discussions also reflected on the decision taken at the 7th AU Mid-Year Coordination Meeting in July 2025 to extend the Reparations Agenda into a Decade of Action (2026–2036). The extension reaffirms the AU’s commitment to justice and historical redress for Africans and people of African descent.
As part of this renewed focus, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama has been designated as the African Union Champion on Reparations, tasked with leading advocacy and coordination across member states.
The Ministry and the Institute pledged to deepen collaboration in research, public education, and stakeholder engagement to ensure Ghana remains at the forefront of the reparations movement.
