Foreign Minister Pushes for Ghana’s Exemption from IELTS Fees

Ghana and the United Kingdom have commenced processes aimed at elevating their bilateral relations to a Strategic Partnership, following high-level discussions between the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and the British High Commissioner to Ghana, His Excellency Christian Rogg.

The meeting, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, focused on aligning priority areas for 2026 in line with the vision of President John Dramani Mahama.

In a post after the engagement, Hon. Ablakwa described Ghana–UK relations as “increasingly buoyant,” noting that both parties had identified key sectors for deeper cooperation. These include security, trade, job creation, health, education, governance, and constitutional review.

The Foreign Minister advocated for a government-to-government framework to protect and improve conditions for Ghanaian health professionals working or aspiring to work in the UK. He also made a special appeal for Ghana to be exempted from the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and associated fees, citing Ghana’s long-standing use of English as the medium of instruction.

Hon. Ablakwa concluded the meeting on a light-hearted note, promising to host the High Commissioner to a traditional meal of Akple and Fetri Detsi in North Tongu—should the Black Stars triumph over England at the World Cup.

The meeting forms part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to strengthen Ghana’s international partnerships and promote mutual development.
