Former President John Dramani Mahama has paid glowing tribute to the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, honouring her as a towering national figure whose courage, influence and leadership transformed generations.
The tribute, delivered on his behalf by Senior Presidential Advisor and Special Aide, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, was read at the state funeral held on Friday, November 28, at the Black Star Square.
Mahama prayed for her peaceful rest and said her legacy would continue to guide Ghana toward justice, equity and progress.
“Fare thee well, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings. Ghana will remember you,” he said.
He described Nana Konadu as more than a First Lady — a pioneering leader, a champion of women’s empowerment, and a bold trailblazer who helped reshape Ghana’s political and social landscape.
According to him, her leadership of the 31st December Women’s Movement created life-changing opportunities for countless women and girls, particularly in rural communities where support was most needed. Through the movement, she championed literacy, reproductive and maternal health, early childhood education and economic empowerment long before these became national priorities.
Mahama praised her as assertive, principled and unafraid to stand alone when necessary. Yet behind her strong public persona, he said, she remained warm, engaging and fiercely protective of her family.
He described her as a mother, grandmother, sister, friend and mentor “whose clarity, energy and purpose shaped every space she occupied.”
Her passing, he added, is a profound loss to her family and the nation, marking the end of a significant era in Ghana’s political and social history, even as her legacy continues to inspire.
Mahama concluded that Nana Konadu lived a life of service, courage and unwavering purpose, always committed to advancing the progress of women and shaping the potential of young people.
