The Government of Ghana has strongly denounced the military takeover in Guinea-Bissau, describing it as an unconstitutional act that threatens democratic governance and regional stability.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday, November 26, Ghana expressed deep concern over the coup d’état carried out by elements of the Guinea-Bissau military. The development, according to the statement, disrupts the electoral process following the peaceful presidential and legislative elections held on November 23.
The military hierarchy of Guinea-Bissau, in a televised briefing, announced that it had seized control of the country. Ghana’s government stressed that the overthrow undermines the democratic will of the people and has halted the anticipated announcement of election results scheduled for November 27.
Calling for calm, Ghana urged all stakeholders in Guinea-Bissau to resolve electoral disputes through peaceful, transparent, and legally recognised mechanisms. The statement further demanded the swift restoration of constitutional order and highlighted the importance of safeguarding the rights and security of both citizens and foreign nationals.
Particular concern was raised for the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission currently deployed in Guinea-Bissau. Ghana insisted that the safety and freedom of movement of the observers be guaranteed without delay.
The government also appealed to the people of Guinea-Bissau to refrain from actions that could heighten tensions. Reaffirming its support for ECOWAS and the African Union, Ghana underscored the need for a coordinated regional response to the crisis, in line with established continental protocols on democracy, good governance, and constitutional rule.
