President John Mahama has revealed that the government will soon roll out a nationwide programme focused on keeping Ghana’s beaches tidy.
He noted that young people will be engaged and provided with monthly stipends to take care of coastal zones.
The announcement was made during the National Conference of Chief Fishermen and Queen Fishmongers on World Fisheries Day 2025, held at the Accra International Conference Centre on Friday, November 21.
President Mahama emphasized that the initiative will actively involve the fishing community, creating jobs while enhancing sanitation along the country’s shoreline.
“We are also going to launch an initiative for clean beaches, and so the fishers are going to be involved,” he stated. “We’re going to employ people to clean the beaches and make sure that our beaches are clean. You can give us your children, we’ll employ them to help clean the beaches for us, and we’ll pay them a monthly allowance.”
He explained that the project is part of wider measures to strengthen the fishing sector and uplift the livelihoods of coastal populations.
Additionally, the President announced plans to construct two new fish markets in the Oti and Central Regions, while assuring that the proposal for a Greater Accra fish market will be given positive consideration.
According to him, these interventions aim to modernize the fisheries value chain, stimulate economic growth in fishing communities, and reinforce Ghana’s fisheries industry.
