Court Grants Blogger GH¢50,000 Bail Over Alleged False Publication

An Accra Circuit Court has approved bail for blogger Samuel Amadotor, operator of Dklassgh.net, in the amount of GH¢50,000 with two guarantors. This follows accusations that he circulated misleading information intended to damage the image of Okatakyie Boakye Danquah Ababio II, the former Chairman of the National Communications Authority (NCA).

Presiding judge, Her Ladyship Evelyn Asamoah, charged Amadotor with two offences:

  • Dissemination of false news with the intention of creating fear and alarm, contrary to Section 208(1) of the Criminal Offences Act (Act 29).
  • Publishing false information under Section 123 of the Electronic Transactions Act (Act 772).

Amadotor entered a plea of not guilty to both counts.

Police reports indicate that he was taken into custody at his residence after allegedly sharing online articles and videos that were said to harm Ababio’s reputation.

After reviewing arguments from both the prosecution and defence, the court granted bail, though the ruling did not specify the grounds for the decision.

Following the proceedings, Amadotor’s counsel, Jerry Avenorgbo, expressed satisfaction with the court’s ruling.

The case is scheduled to proceed further after Amadotor’s release on bail.
