In a bold step toward advancing Ghana’s climate agenda, the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has officially launched a strategic partnership with the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) under a new initiative titled “Enhancing Parliamentary Action on Climate Change: Strengthening the Role of Parliament in Reducing Methane Emissions.”

The project aims to empower Ghana’s legislature to take a leading role in the fight against climate change, with a particular focus on reducing methane emissions—a potent greenhouse gas with significant environmental impact. The initiative positions Parliament as a key driver of national and global climate action, leveraging its legislative and oversight powers to promote sustainable practices.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, the Speaker emphasized Parliament’s responsibility in shaping effective climate policy and amplifying the voices of vulnerable communities most affected by environmental degradation. “Through our collective efforts, Parliament will emerge as a true champion of methane reduction and climate resilience,” he affirmed.

The event drew a distinguished audience including Members of Parliament, the Clerk and Deputy Clerks to Parliament, senior management of the Parliamentary Service, civil society representatives, and members of the media. The partnership is expected to enhance lawmakers’ capacity to craft robust legislation, advocate for climate justice, and ensure accountability in environmental governance.
This collaboration marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s climate journey and reflects a growing commitment to global sustainability goals.
