In a solemn and heartfelt tribute, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of Ghana journeyed to Bondo in Siaya County, Kenya, yesterday to honor the memory of the late Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, former Prime Minister of Kenya and revered champion of democracy across Africa.
President Akufo-Addo was joined by senior officials of the Kenyan government and Gideon Moi, National Chairman of the Kanu Party, as they paid their final respects to Odinga, whose legacy as a statesman and reformist continues to resonate across the continent.
Speaking during the visit, President Akufo-Addo described Odinga as a “beloved friend” and a “democracy icon,” lauding his lifelong commitment to political stability, democratic governance, and national unity in Kenya. “Raila’s remarkable footprints on Kenya’s stability, democracy and history will remain indelible,” he said.
The Ghanaian leader also took time to commiserate with Odinga’s widow, children, and the people of Siaya County, offering words of comfort and solidarity in their time of grief.
Odinga, who passed away earlier this month, was a towering figure in Kenyan politics, known for his resilience, reformist zeal, and unwavering dedication to the ideals of justice and equality. His contributions to Kenya’s democratic evolution earned him admiration both at home and abroad.
Concluding his tribute, President Akufo-Addo expressed a spiritual farewell: “May his soul find peaceful rest in the Bosom of the Almighty, until the Last Day of the Resurrection, when we shall all meet again.”
The visit underscored the deep bonds of friendship and shared democratic values between Ghana and Kenya, and marked a poignant moment in the collective mourning of one of Africa’s most influential political leaders.
