The Ghana Education Service (GES) has cautioned heads of schools and staff against the collection of unauthorized Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) levies in second-cycle and basic schools across the country.
In a statement issued by the Public Relations Unit at the GES Headquarters in Accra, the Service noted with concern that some institutions have been collecting PTA dues without the approval of the recognized Parent-Teacher Associations.
The release, signed by Mrs. Cassandra Twum Ampofo, Head of Public Relations, stressed that no school has been granted permission to impose PTA or development levies at the basic school level. It explained that any such collections must first receive clearance from the District Education Oversight Committee (DEOC) through the District Director of Education.
The GES has therefore directed all Regional Directors of Education to ensure strict compliance with this directive. It further warned that any head of school, teacher, or GES staff member found flouting the order will face both administrative and legal sanctions.
According to the statement, Regional and District Directors are to closely monitor schools under their jurisdiction and report any breaches for immediate action.
The Service reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding parents and guardians from undue financial burdens, while ensuring that education delivery remains accessible and equitable for all Ghanaian children.
