The Minister for the Interior, Honourable Muntaka Mubarak, has inaugurated a seven-member Mediation Committee to help address the protracted Gbiniyiri conflict in the Savannah Region.

The Committee, chaired by renowned peacebuilding expert Mr. Emmanuel Habuka Bombande, is tasked with working closely with key stakeholders to advance peacebuilding, reconciliation, and the sustainable resettlement of persons displaced by the clashes.
Other members include:
- Hon. Alhaji Collins Dauda — MP and Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Lands & Natural Resources
- Rev. Fr. Lazarus Annyereh — Chair, Savannah Regional Peace Council
- Dr. Festus Aubyn — West Africa Network for Peacebuilding
- Sylvia Horname Noagbesenu, Esq. — Acting Director, Women, Youth, Peace & Security Institute, KAIPTC
- Prof. Ramatu Alhassan — Department of Agricultural Economics & Agribusiness, University of Ghana
- Dr. George Amoh — Executive Secretary, National Peace Council
Hon. Muntaka underscored the Committee’s “critical mandate of fostering peace, security, and social cohesion” in Gbiniyiri and surrounding communities.
The Committee’s Terms of Reference include:
- Facilitating the safe and dignified return of displaced residents
- Assessing the extent and impact of the conflict
- Promoting dialogue and reconciliation among stakeholders
- Recommending sustainable peacebuilding strategies
- Strengthening local institutions to prevent future conflicts
The Minister urged the members to execute their duties impartially, transparently, and inclusively, engaging traditional authorities, opinion leaders, civil society, and security agencies to rebuild peace and trust.
The Gbiniyiri conflict, which has displaced thousands, has been a source of deep concern for government and humanitarian agencies. The Committee’s work is expected to pave the way for lasting stability in the area.
