MTN Ghana to Phase Out 2G and 3G Networks Gradually, CEO Assures

MTN Ghana has revealed plans to gradually retire its legacy 2G and 3G networks, with a commitment to giving subscribers sufficient time to transition to more advanced technologies.

Speaking at the Digital Africa Summit held in Accra, Chief Executive Officer Stephen Blewett emphasized that a considerable portion of MTN’s customer base still relies on older-generation networks.

“Despite the widespread availability of 4G, a lot of our customers are still on 3G. For some, it is about managing their data consumption, while others are constrained by devices that cannot support 4G,” Mr Blewett explained.

The CEO acknowledged that while the shift to newer networks is inevitable, MTN is mindful of the practical challenges many customers face. He noted that the company’s strategy is aimed at enhancing spectrum efficiency over time, but the transition will be executed with caution.

“We cannot simply switch off 2G and 3G without ensuring that affordable 4G devices are within reach. Doing so would risk excluding a large number of Ghanaians,” he cautioned.

MTN’s announcement signals a forward-looking move toward modernizing its infrastructure, while also prioritizing accessibility and customer readiness.
