President John Dramani Mahama has officially removed Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo from office, acting on the recommendation of a constitutionally mandated committee of inquiry.
The decision, announced in a statement issued by the Presidency Communications Directorate, was made in accordance with Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution. It follows the submission of a petition by Mr. Daniel Ofori and a subsequent investigation by a committee established under Article 146(4).
After reviewing the evidence presented, the committee concluded that grounds of stated misbehavior under Article 146(1) had been established and formally recommended her removal.
“In line with Article 146(9), the President is required to act in accordance with the committee’s recommendation,” the statement read.

The announcement was signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Member of Parliament and Spokesperson to the President, who also serves as Minister for Government Communications.
Justice Torkornoo’s removal marks a significant moment in Ghana’s judicial history, as it underscores the constitutional process for addressing allegations against high-ranking judicial officers. The committee’s work, which included closed-door hearings and extensive evidence review, was part of a broader inquiry into three separate petitions filed earlier this year.
Further reports on the remaining petitions are expected in due course.
