Obuasi Court Rejects K.T. Hammond’s Election Case, Imposes GH¢60k Penalty

The High Court in Obuasi, located in the Ashanti Region, has rejected an election petition brought by former Minister for Trade and Industry, Kobina Tahiru Hammond widely known as K.T. Hammond contesting the parliamentary win of Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi Dorani in Adansi Asokwa.

Delivering judgment on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, Justice Kwabena Twumasi dismissed the case and ordered Mr. Hammond to pay a penalty of GH¢60,000, labeling the petition as a misuse of judicial resources.

Following the verdict, Mr. Dorani’s legal representative, Richard Andy, stated that the petition was baseless and welcomed the court’s decision. He noted that the decision would allow the MP to concentrate fully on his parliamentary duties.

Mr. Hammond, who had served as MP for over twenty years, lost his seat in the 2024 general elections by a margin of 954 votes. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Mr. Dorani, garnered 14,229 votes, while Mr. Hammond received 13,275.

Unhappy with the outcome, the former Minister lodged a legal challenge at the Obuasi High Court on January 15, 2025. However, his failure to attend court proceedings on three separate occasions ultimately led to the case being struck out.
