The 2025 edition of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) officially kicked off today, Wednesday, August 20, with 461,640 students nationwide sitting for the Oral English paper.
This year’s cohort includes 207,381 boys and 254,259 girls, showing a modest rise of 1,029 candidates compared to the 460,611 who participated in the exam last year.
The examination is being conducted in phases, beginning with the practical assessments on August 4, while the core written papers commenced today.
This year also marks the fourth consecutive time Ghanaian students are taking part in the “Ghana Only” version of WASSCE, a format introduced to allow the country full autonomy over its exam schedule.
Previously, students from Ghana wrote the exams alongside peers from other West African nations including Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and The Gambia. However, due to disruptions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, Ghana transitioned to a localized timetable tailored specifically for its students.
