President John Mahama has announced the posthumous promotion of eight Ghana Armed Forces personnel who lost their lives in the August 6 helicopter crash.
Speaking at their state funeral on Friday, 15th August, 2025 the President hailed the fallen servicemen as true patriots who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty. He emphasized that their bravery, dedication, and sacrifice would forever be remembered in the nation’s history.
Among those honoured were Wing Commander Peter Baafemi Anala, Flight Lieutenant Manaen Twum Ampadu, and Flight Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah. Their new ranks were formally conferred by the Ghana Armed Forces as recognition of their exceptional service.
“Accordingly, I have approved the following: Squadron Leader Peter Baafemi Anala is promoted to the rank of Wing Commander; Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu is promoted to Flight Lieutenant; and Sergeant Ernest Addo is promoted to Flight Sergeant. These are not just symbolic gestures. They represent the rightful place these officers have earned in our nation’s roll of honour,” President Mahama revealed.
He further assured that the benefits due to the families of the fallen officers will reflect these new ranks.
The tragic crash, which occurred during a routine mission, plunged the nation into mourning and drew tributes from across Ghana. President Mahama reaffirmed the state’s commitment to supporting the bereaved families and ensuring that the legacies of the fallen servicemen endure.
The Ghana Armed Forces have pledged to complete ongoing investigations into the cause of the crash and implement measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
