The Ghana Police Service has issued a notice of temporary road shutdowns and traffic redirection in Accra on Friday, August 15, to facilitate public safety and efficient traffic flow during the inter-denominational and inter-faith state funeral for victims of the August 6 helicopter tragedy.
The announcement was made in a statement signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police Grace Ansah-Akrofi on Thursday, August 14.
According to the statement, the following roads near the funeral venue will be inaccessible to vehicles:
- 28th February Road: Stretch from CEPS Traffic Light Intersection to Castle Road Junction
- Osu Cemetery Traffic Light along Lokko Street
- Castle Road: Section from AU Circle to Osu Cemetery Traffic Light
- Starlet 91 Road at the Ministries Traffic Light Intersection
Regarding traffic rerouting, the police indicated that vehicles traveling from La, Labone, and Osu towards Accra Central and the Ministries via 28th February Road will be redirected onto Salem Avenue at the Castle Traffic Light, continuing through Oxford Street.
Additional detour instructions include:
- Drivers on Lokko Street heading toward Castle Road should use Ajumaku Street and Oxford Street instead.
- Vehicles coming from John Evans Atta Mills High Street en route to Black Star Square will be diverted onto Liberia Road at the CEPS Traffic Intersection, proceeding toward the National Theatre.
- Traffic from AU Circle aiming for Castle Road via Osu Cemetery Traffic Light will be rerouted through Abdul Diouf and King Hassan Roads, connecting with Abdul Nasser Road near the Ghana Institute of Journalism.
Concerning parking arrangements, the police emphasized that only vehicles bearing red VVIP windscreen tags will be permitted entry and parking at the Black Star Square venue.
Designated parking locations include:
- Black Star Square (VVIP, VIP)
- State House Forecourt
- Accra International Conference Centre
- Access Bank Car Park
- Osu Cemetery Car Park
- Accra Sports Stadium Car Park
- Ministry of Food and Agriculture Car Park
- Marine Drive Football Park
- Afua Sutherland Car Park
- Other authorized zones within the Ministries area
On security measures, the police warned that no vehicle will be allowed to park in unauthorized spots or bypass road barricades. Tow trucks will be on standby to clear any abandoned, malfunctioning, or improperly parked vehicles. Traffic personnel will be deployed to guide drivers to designated parking areas and alternate routes.
The statement concluded with a public advisory: “Motorists are encouraged to take note of these traffic arrangements and plan their routes accordingly. The general public, particularly drivers, is urged to cooperate with law enforcement and other security bodies to ensure smooth traffic regulation and public order.”
