The National Cathedral: Where It Stands and What’s Unfolding

The Minister of State responsible for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has disclosed alarming revelations concerning the National Cathedral initiative launched by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. These revelations stem from a recently reviewed audit conducted by Deloitte and Touche.

Covering the timeframe from December 31, 2021, to December 31, 2023, the audit exposes a series of financial anomalies, including violations of procurement procedures, undocumented expenses, and deficient oversight mechanisms within the National Cathedral Secretariat.

The findings highlight a pervasive neglect of established protocols, with unaccounted-for disbursements, inconsistencies in contract valuations, and fragile internal checks—collectively suggesting systemic mismanagement at the top levels of administration.

In contrast to earlier publicized estimates, the government now confirms that the total financial outlay for the project has reached $97 million.

This figure encompasses an unpaid balance of $39 million owed to the primary contractor, despite the project having been dormant for several years. Crucially, the flawed structure of the contract allows costs to continue accruing daily, compounding the fiscal strain on the national budget.
