The Parliament of Ghana has announced a two-day commemoration to mark 20 years since the passing of Rt. Hon. Justice Daniel Francis Annan, the first Speaker of the Fourth Republic. The programme, scheduled for Wednesday, July 15, 2026, and Thursday, July 16, 2026, will be held under the auspices of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.
Justice Annan, who presided over the First and Second Parliaments of the Fourth Republic from 1993 to 2001, is remembered for his pivotal role in consolidating Ghana’s return to constitutional rule and shaping the foundations of parliamentary democracy in the Fourth Republic.
On July 15, leadership from both sides of the House will deliver formal statements reflecting on the life, service, and contributions of the late Speaker. The following day, July 16, will feature a wreath-laying ceremony and a memorial lecture at the D. F. Annan Auditorium. The lecture will be delivered by retired Supreme Court Justice William Atuguba.
The Parliamentary Service, in its release, extended an invitation to members of the media, the general public, and stakeholders of Ghana’s democracy to join in honouring the legacy of Justice Annan, whose stewardship is credited with strengthening parliamentary traditions and democratic governance.
