The Deputy Minister for Health, Hon. Prof. Dr Grace Ayensu-Danquah, has visited the Presbyterian Health Centre at Fuoshegu as part of the Ministry’s ongoing maternal mortality reduction tour. Her engagement with the Chief of Fuoshegu, Naa Gurundo Lasah, and health partners highlighted the facility’s innovative approach to managing anaemia among pregnant women through strong community participation.
Dr Ayensu-Danquah commended the support of Lifenet International, whose renovation of parts of the facility, staff training, and provision of oxygen cylinders have significantly strengthened maternal healthcare delivery. She emphasized that such partnerships are vital in improving outcomes for mothers and newborns.
During her visit, the Deputy Minister called for greater community involvement to help reduce maternal deaths. She noted pressing challenges at the facility, including inadequate space for patient care, the absence of an ambulance for emergency referrals, and the need for a sustainable supply of essential medicines.
Concluding Day One of her maternal mortality assessment tour of the Northern Region, Dr Ayensu-Danquah met with the Sagnaar Naa and other traditional leaders. She underscored the importance of early care-seeking, timely emergency referrals, and sustained community awareness in reducing maternal deaths.
Her engagements also extended to members of the Private Health Facilities Association of Ghana, where discussions centered on how the private sector can complement government efforts in tackling maternal mortality.
The Deputy Minister’s tour continues across the Northern Region, with a focus on strengthening collaboration between communities, traditional leaders, and health partners to ensure safer motherhood.
