The issue of poor sanitation continues to plague many communities across Ghana, particularly in Zongo areas, where inadequate waste management and clogged drainage systems remain major concerns.
This year’s rainy season has further exposed the problem, with flooding incidents destroying properties, disrupting businesses, and claiming lives in several parts of the country.
One of the communities grappling with these challenges is Nima, one of the largest market districts within the Zongo community in Accra. During a visit to the area, traders and residents expressed deep concern over the worsening sanitation situation and its impact on their daily lives.
According to the market women and shop owners, indiscriminate dumping of refuse and blocked gutters have contributed significantly to poor sanitation within the enclave. They lamented that the persistent problem not only threatens their livelihoods but also poses serious health risks to residents.
They called on the government, NADMO, and other relevant stakeholders to intensify sanitation efforts in the community by improving waste collection services, desilting drains, and enforcing sanitation regulations.
The residents also urged community members to play their part by maintaining cleanliness and avoiding the disposal of waste into gutters and waterways.
As the rains continue, many in Nima hope that swift intervention from authorities will help address the longstanding sanitation challenges in one of Accra’s busiest market communities.
