Firefighters of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have successfully contained a major blaze following a head-on collision between a fuel tanker and a tipper truck on the Accra–Tema Motorway late Monday night.
The incident, which occurred at approximately 11:49 p.m. between Saka Saka Park and Tanink Ghana, involved a fuel tanker (AS 3555-24) belonging to GIG EMPIRE and a tipper truck (AS 466-19). The tanker was fully engulfed in flames when the first crew from the Tema Motorway Fire Station, led by ADO I Samuel Darko, arrived at 11:54 p.m.
Reinforcements from the Ashaiman Fire Station (11:59 p.m.) and the Tema Industrial Area Fire Station (12:14 a.m.), supported by a water tanker from the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly, joined the operation. The coordinated firefighting effort brought the blaze under control at 12:56 a.m. and fully extinguished it at 1:44 a.m.
Three injured occupants — Kwabena Agyapong, Joseph Teye Quarshie, and Aaron Kyei — were rushed to the Tema General Hospital before GNFS arrival. The charred remains of a male, believed to be the tipper truck driver, were later retrieved and handed over to the Police at 2:19 a.m. for preservation and investigation.
The fire caused extensive damage, including the complete burnout of 26 tanker tyres, severe destruction to both vehicle heads, and the loss of an undetermined quantity of fuel. Cooling operations and scene management continue in collaboration with the Police as traffic flow is gradually restored.
GNFS commended all responding crews and supporting agencies, with special recognition to Tema Operational Officer DO II Samuel Fiifi Oppong for exemplary leadership in ensuring operational coordination and safety.
⚠️ Traffic Advisory ⚠️ Motorists using the Accra–Tema Motorway are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution, comply with traffic directions, and adhere to safety instructions from emergency and traffic personnel as clearance and recovery operations continue.
