Ghana and Jamaica Revive PJCC After 21-Year Hiatus

Ghana and Jamaica have revived their Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation (PJCC) after a 21-year break, ushering in a new era of strengthened bilateral relations.

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, commended his Jamaican counterpart, Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, for leading an impressive delegation of ministers and senior officials to Accra. He also conveyed heartfelt congratulations to her for serving as Jamaica’s Foreign Minister for a decade, noting her distinction as the country’s first female Foreign Minister and currently the longest-serving female Foreign Minister in the world.

Hon. Ablakwa expressed humility at her kind remarks about him during her historic visit, describing the renewed enthusiasm in Ghana–Jamaica relations as deeply inspiring.

A key outcome of the PJCC was the signing of an agreement to deploy 400 Ghanaian nurses to Jamaica to boost healthcare delivery. Additional agreements were concluded in defence cooperation and tourism, while both nations committed to finalizing negotiations to send Ghanaian teachers to Jamaica by August this year.

Hon. Ablakwa highlighted the global demand for Ghanaian professionals, celebrating Jamaica’s unwavering support during the landmark adoption of Ghana’s UN-led resolution declaring the transatlantic enslavement the gravest crime against humanity. Jamaica also renewed appreciation for Ghana’s humanitarian support following Hurricane Melisa, when Ghana dispatched soldiers and relief items.

In a further sign of deepening ties, Jamaican Prime Minister, The Rt. Hon. Andrew Holness, has extended a special invitation to President John Dramani Mahama to serve as Guest of Honour at this year’s Jamaican National Day celebrations.
