The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has inaugurated its maiden Ambassadors’ Chat Series, featuring centenarian Ambassador Richard Maximillian Akwei, one of Ghana’s ten pioneering Foreign Service Officers who helped chart the country’s early diplomatic course. The event, held on April 28, 2026, provided officers of the Ministry with a rare opportunity to engage directly with a statesman whose career shaped Ghana’s voice on the global stage.
The initiative seeks to create an informal yet impactful platform for serving officers to interact with retired ambassadors, drawing lessons from their practical experiences to enhance professional development.
In his reflections, Ambassador Akwei recalled Ghana’s bold positions in international relations since independence, including its role in Africa’s liberation struggle, the establishment of the Organisation of African Unity (now African Union), and the Non-Aligned Movement. He described working closely with Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, as deeply inspiring, noting that those formative years laid the foundation for Ghana’s enduring diplomatic identity.
Beyond recounting his active years, Ambassador Akwei also shared perspectives on current global developments, their implications for nations, and the expectations placed on international organizations in addressing today’s challenges.
He lauded the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and the Ministry’s leadership for initiating the Chat Series, commending the Minister’s exemplary leadership and relentless efforts in advancing Ghana’s foreign policy.
The maiden edition of the Ambassadors’ Chat Series proved engaging and insightful, setting the stage for future sessions that promise to preserve the wisdom of Ghana’s diplomatic pioneers while nurturing the next generation of foreign service officers.
