The New Patriotic Party (NPP) will today, Wednesday, April 22, hold a protest in Sunyani, a move expected to intensify political tensions in the Bono Region.
The demonstration, dubbed the “Yen Suro Ahunahuna Demo”—an Akan phrase meaning “We are not afraid of intimidation”—is anticipated to draw supporters, sympathisers, and residents from across the region.
The protest comes in response to the arrest of the party’s Sunyani East Communications Officer, Abubakar Yakubu, popularly known as Baba Amando.
Party officials say his detention has raised concern among members, arguing that the circumstances surrounding the arrest call into question the protection of fundamental rights, including freedom of speech and political expression.
Regional executives of the NPP have described the arrest as troubling and are demanding greater transparency from law enforcement authorities. They insist the protest is not only about Baba Amando’s arrest but also a wider call to defend democratic principles and civil liberties in Ghana.
According to the party, the demonstration will serve as a platform to highlight what it sees as growing threats to constitutional rights and the rule of law.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has assured the public that adequate security measures have been put in place to ensure the protest remains peaceful and orderly. Police have also urged participants to cooperate with security personnel and adhere to regulations governing public demonstrations.
